London Vision Clinic | ReLEx SMILE | Live laser eye surgery | Professor Dan Reinstein

In this video, Professor Dan Reinstein performs a ReLEx SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) – a keyhole type of LASIK procedure – filmed in real-time to demonstrate the full 3 and-a-half minute procedure from multiple angles. The superior design and optical precision of the Carl Zeiss Meditec Visumax femtosecond makes it the only femtosecond laser that is accurate enough to perform laser eye surgery through a keyhole incision in the cornea without the need for creating a flap and disruption of the corneal nerves and tearfilm that results from flap creation in the standard LASIK technique. The patient is only in contact with the device is less than 40 seconds with extremely low contract force such that the patient feels effectively nothing, there are no red splodges (subconjunctival haemorages) left behind. From the surgeons' standpoint the laser procedure is one step: contact with the patient cornea and lenticule creation. The accuracy of ReLEx SMILE has been shown to be higher than that of LASIK in that it is far more accurate for higher prescriptions, and ReLEx smile can perform treatment for myopia / short-sightedness from -1.00 to -10 and in some instances up to -14 D.

@Diya Biju it’s been about a year since I got the surgery now. My eyesight is perfect tbh. I will admit there are some changes/adjustments that had to be made: can’t stare at a screen for hours at a time, it causes my eyes to strain quicker. And sunlight is extra bright, so I have to wear shades. Other then that, it’s all good. I also stopped taking eyedrops around the 6 month mark.

@Pb69xi sorry, I’m Indian, and the “doctors” I’ve seen in india…I wouldn’t trust them unless they’re trained in the US or Europe or something, and even then be careful.

I just had the SMILE procedure and I can tell you it really is like magic. The surgeon reassures you every step of the way, you feel nothing and all you see is light. If you’re thinking about having it done I say go for it!

  2. Yeah, no.

had this done in singapore about a month ago, my left was 1050 and right was 950 with astig on both sides, now its 6/6, astig’s seems to be corrected too because no issues there. I only regret not doing it earlier and delaying it due to fear of pain. didn’t know the procedure went like that because all I saw was a green light, felt a ticklish sensation and what felt like lens shifting across my eyeball. no pain at all. I think you can’t put dollars and cents to it when it comes to eyesight correction ? you only have a pair of eyeballs so get the best surgeon to do it. the temporarily mild LASIK dry eye I’m having now is nothing compared to the mornings I wake up fumbling for my glasses and spending all that money that could have gone into this op, on contacts and solution and eye drops to keep me from scratching my contacts out of my eyes in dry environments. really, if you’ve saved up or already have the financial means to do it, just do it.

I hope some doctors will invent a thing that could make the layer separates itself by ITSELF and the doctors just have to pull it out. I hope the procedure will soon evolve to be just 10 seconds for each eye

@udhay sharma I’m trying bro ? you also have to be around 25yo; or at least show history that your eyesight is stable and isn’t getting worse. Mine kept getting worse until 25 or 26.

I had this surgery last week. My sister has had it and she asked me not to watch this video before the procedure. I wouldn’t have let anyone near my eye if I had seen this video before ?.

Anyway, it did not hurt at all. The only discomfort I had was the doctor asked me not to wash my face till next visit. (The next visit was after 24 hours and the nurses cleaned up my face before leaving, so it wasn’t that bad.) Other than that, my eyes were a little sensitive to the direct light and reflections. (Not in a bad way though. It was just a little too bright and a little hazy).

Overall it was a complete success. To be honest, I did not expect it to be this easy. Getting an injection will hurt more than this.
It was a very simple procedure. If you are thinking about having it, don’t think twice. Getting rid of glasses is probably the best thing I have done for myself. ☺️

@EVERYTHING PRO I had the SMILE procedure done 3 months ago and don’t regret it at all. I’ve had family members get LASIK and felt the same way, but eye dryness post-op is much less severe with SMILE. I still add drops every couple of days because I work in windy/dusty conditions (they say it can last up to 6 months), but other than that it’s like I never had poor vision
